In 2021, Congress enhanced the premium tax credits that help people afford insurance through HealthCare.gov. These expanded credits made a big difference — lowering monthly costs and allowing more families to get covered. But unless Congress takes action, these enhancements will expire after 2025.

If that happens, more than 300,000 Arizonans will face a sudden spike in health insurance costs. Many will be forced to drop coverage altogether — and the impact will hit our communities hard.

Here’s what’s at stake:

Nearly 350,000 Arizonans enrolled in marketplace insurance in 2024. Over 300,000 relied on premium tax credits to afford it.

Without the enhanced credits, average annual costs will jump by $1,500, and monthly premiums will rise from $121 to $252.

A nonpartisan study by the Urban Institute estimates that over 100,000 Arizonans will lose coverage entirely.

That includes 12,000 children, 55,000 non-Hispanic whites, 30,000 Latinos, 6,000 African Americans, and 12,000 people from other racial and ethnic backgrounds.

The fallout will also hit Arizona’s health system — hospitals and providers could lose nearly $400 million in revenue, threatening care for everyone.

50,000 children

21,000 small-business owners

35,000 self-employed individuals

62,000 rural residents

1,600 members of federally recognized tribes
