South Florida waters used to be some of the most beautiful in the world, but for the past years, there have been releases occurring from Lake Okeechobee that have proven toxic for the communities here. This lake water is toxic because big sugar companies such as the US Sugar Corporation have been dumping their toxic runoff into a once beautiful place. This year the releases have been proven so toxic that you cannot even breathe the air around the disgusting algae.
The algae that has been infesting the water can lead to sickness and could even kill you if you touch it. Our local beaches have been forced to hang 'No Swimming' flags and local businesses have to shut down previously because they relied on the rivers and ocean. I want my home back. Please help me.
Our state legislature refuses to do anything about this issue because the big sugar companies give large amounts of money to our governor and other officials. It is sad that the government cares more about money than the people's concerns, the marine life, and lots more. Please help me try and make a change.
