Dear Sacramento Policy Maker,
We the undersigned wish to ban plastic grocery bags in the City of Sacramento. Plastic bags fill our landfills, endanger wildlife, and increase our dependance on foriegn oil. Americans consume over 380 billion plastic bags per year, of which only 1% are recycled. These bags are petroleum based, using over 400,000 gallons of crude oil to produce 100 million plastic bags. Plastic bags do not biodegrade, they photodegrade (breaking down into small toxic particles). These particles contaminate our soil and waterways. As Sacramento strives to be among the most livable cities in the United States, this ban is an essential step. Let's join San Francisco, California, Suffolk County, New York, Annapolis, Maryland and others and ban the bag. Thanks for your support in this. We share the desire to make Sacramento a truly sustainable city!
