Duke Energy has been in the headlines lately for all the wrong reasons: skyrocketing power bills, blackouts causing problems -- and now Duke Energy wants authorization to triple the amount of expensive and dirty gas in the company's future power plans. If approved, the company's latest Carbon Plan proposal would line Duke's pockets by putting ratepayers on the hook to pay for expensive, unnecessary gas plants that threaten our health and our climate.

More gas is a bad idea. Duke Energy admits that volatile gas prices are a big reason for increasing energy rates, and investigations conducted after 2022's disastrous Winter Storm Elliott showed that gas failed far more than any other energy source. What's more, gas-powered electricity emits methane, a greenhouse gas more potent than CO2. Duke's plan to triple-down on this dangerous fossil fuel is irresponsible when we have clean, stable, affordable alternatives like wind, solar and reliable energy storage technologies.
