Ban Dogfighting in Mexico

Dogs are often subjected to the terrible cruelty of dogfighting — a spectacle that pits one dog against another. This brutal practice forces dogs to fight until they are seriously injured and often times killed.

The people behind this terrible spectacle sometimes kill the losing dog while the "winner" often dies due to injuries sustained during the fight. What is clear is that no dog truly wins where dogfighting is concerned. What's more is that police often discover drugs, guns and even murder in connection with dogfights.

There is no place for dogfighting in Mexico.

Several Mexican states explicitly ban the practice but the laws are too weak as-is and mostly lead to impunity. Dogfighting still takes place because no federal law explicitly prohibits it. Federal legislation banning and criminalizing dogfighting would eliminate the loopholes in these state laws and establish strong penalties for anyone associated with this blood competition.

According to a leading polling agency, 99% of Mexicans condemn dogfights and 85% believe dogfighters should be penalized. It's time we showed our support for Mexico's people and animals.

Urge legislators to ban dogfighting in Mexico with clear enforcement and penalties!
Dear legislators,

Subject: Please ban and penalize dog fighting in Mexico!

I am writing to ask you kindly to support the enactment of federal legislation to ban and criminalize dogfighting.

Humankind's best friend is often forced to fight to the death in this cruel spectacle, commonly with tens of thousands of dollars at stake and no consideration for the welfare of the animal participants. Sadly, the people who organize this blood competition usually kill the losing dogs. The winners don't typically do much better as they sustain serious injuries that are so severe they also die in some cases. Police often discover drugs, guns, and even murder in connection with dogfights so by criminalizing the spectacle, you may also reduce organized crime.

Currently in Mexico, there is no federal dogfighting ban and it is not typified in the criminal code. Several states explicitly ban the practice but the laws are too weak as-is and mostly lead to impunity. Federal legislation banning and criminalizing dogfighting would eliminate the loopholes in these state laws. According to a leading polling agency, 99% of Mexicans condemn dogfights and 85% believe dogfighters should be penalized.

As a legislator, you have the opportunity to make lasting positive change for your country by ending this senseless practice. Mexico needs less cruelty and more compassion for these poor animals. A federal ban like this would help strengthen social bonds, confront violence and enhance the law's effects. Please, put an end to dogfighting in Mexico.
