Donald Trump just can't keep his mouth shut — who could have seen THAT coming? As the serially indicted fraudster is wont to do, Trump started his troublemaking by publicly attacking Judge Juan Merchan, who is presiding over his hush money trial (this is the secret payment to a porn star trial, not Trump's decades of fraud trial or his stolen classified documents trial). His behavior earned the disgraced ex-president an immediate gag order from Judge Merchan, but that didn't stop him.
On the morning his trial was to begin, Trump publicly attacked Michael Cohen, his former fixer and a witness for the prosecution against him. "Has disgraced attorney and felon Michael Cohen been prosecuted for LYING?" wrote Trump on Truth Social. This was a clear violation of the gag order barring him from attacking witnesses.
Since then, Trump has violated his gag order TEN TIMES. Enough is enough!
Hold Trump accountable for violating his gag order!
For far too long, Trump has been able to wiggle his way out of consequences for anything and everything he does, and his gag order violations have just resulted in slap-on-the wrist fines. But it appears Judge Merchan has had enough. "I'll find you in criminal contempt for the tenth time," said Merchan on May 6th. "It appears that the $1,000 fines are not serving as a deterrent. Therefore, going forward, this court will have to consider a jail sanction. Mr. Trump, it's important to understand the last thing I want to do is put you in jail. You are the former president of the United States, and possibly the next one as well."
His status as ex-president should never, ever be a get-out-of-jail-free card. Trump uses his mouth and his social media outlets to intimidate and bully anyone who tries to hold him accountable or oppose his heinous agenda. It's vital that we send a message to the nation and make it clear that the law applies to EVERYONE, especially ex-presidents who incite insurrections against the government.
