Demand Maximum Sentence for Ohio Man Charged with Cutting Dog’s Throat

On June 26th, Zanesville, OH police responded to a report of a woman covered in blood. When they arrived on the scene, they found that the woman was not covered in her own blood, but rather in the blood of a 20 pound dog whose throat had been cut.

The woman’s boyfriend, 32 year old Justin C. Smith, admitted to responding officer Sgt. Jim DeVoll that he slit the dog’s throat with a utility knife to get his girlfriend’s attention. Smith reportedly told DeVoll that he cut the dog’s throat because he could, and asked the officer to shoot the dog to ‘put it out of its misery’. The small dog was barely alive when officers reported to the scene, and died soon afterward.
