President Trump recently announced his full support for a proposed bipartisan bill dubbed the First Step Act.
This legislation, if passed, would result in some long overdue reform to the criminal justice system. Among other things, it would retroactively close the disparity between crack cocaine and powdered cocaine sentencing, enforce the civil rights of inmates including the guarantee of free feminine hygiene items, and would even loosen mandatory sentencing policies, not only reducing the length of certain sentences but granting greater leeway for convicted individuals to be exempt from such sentences altogether.
Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell has already told President Trump that it is very unlikely the Senate will be voting on the First Step Act soon.
That's why it's important that, even if this lame-duck Congress won't vote on this important piece of criminal justice reform, that the incoming Congress — in both the House and the Senate — know that the American public supports the First Step Act and wants it to be a high priority on next year's Congressional agenda!
