Help make National Sustainable Seafood Day official in Canada

Canadians love seafood, eating an average of almost 6 fish or shellfish meals a month. But, overfishing and destructive fishing practices are threatening marine life and the health of our oceans!

Facts:

• Over 90% of large marine predators have disappeared from our oceans

• Globally, 75% of fisheries are fully exploited, overexploited or depleted

• Illegal, unreported and unregulated (IUU) fishing globally costs $10-23.5 billion dollars annually

• On average, 27 million tonnes of bycatch are discarded each year

Creating a National Sustainable Seafood Day will provide a platform to educate Canadians on the health of our oceans, and to learn about sustainable seafood. It will also give us an opportunity to celebrate (and, of course, indulge in) ocean-friendly seafood options.

Dear Canadian Government,

I am joining Canadians in support of making National Sustainable Seafood Day official on Canada's calendar. Making smart seafood decisions for today and tomorrow is crucial for keeping our oceans healthy.

Overfishing and destructive fishing practices are threatening marine life and the health of our oceans. Canadian consumers want to support ocean-friendly seafood options and the Canadian seafood industries are providing increased opportunities for consumers to make sustainable seafood purchases.

Thank you for your support in making an official day dedicated to ocean-friendly seafood awareness and celebration.
