You see them every day; the cat crouched in the corner of a building or an alley, one ear notched. These cats are part of a feral cat colony and unlike your average stray or castaway have never lived in a home. Born wild they help to keep down populations of mice and other vermin and the colonies once registered are cared for. Through the efforts of dedicated people and veterinarians they are trapped, spayed or neutered, ears notched, given vaccines to limit any diseases that may travel through a colony, fed , watered and cared for on a daily basis by volunteers..

Now they are under attack and restrictions. Currently in Brevard County Florida they are no longer registering New Feral colonies and are trying to repeal their protections, making it legal to trap, kill or take them to a high kill shelter for euthanasia. With the current memorandum it is necessary to ask all of your neighbors for permission to host a feral colony on your own property, no matter how large it is.

The Brevard County Animal Advisory Board will conduct a public workshop on possible changes to Brevard’s feral cat ordinance Tuesday July 31, 2012 at 6:30 p.m. on the second-floor Space Coast Room of Building C of the Government Center, 2725 Judge Fran Jamieson Way, Viera.

***This date has been changed to a later date. I was there at 6:30 pm tonight, and that building was closed and shut very tight. There was someone else there waiting on the meeting that had drove a bit further than I had. I will update when I find out. Keep signing though!***

We are asking all who can to show up or sign this petition to help over turn this memorandum and protect the colonies already in existence.

To the Brevard County Commissioners’;

The Feral Cat Colonies help to keep down vermin in the areas they reside. They are Spayed, Neutered, Ear Notched and Vaccinated against feline diseases by caring Vets who donate much of their time and efforts. They are fed and watered by volunteers who strive to ensure these cats bother no one, but are allowed to live as they were born, free.

We are asking that you reverse the Memorandum restricting Feral Cat Colonies only to those areas that neighbors have given their consent. Often these cats were there long before the neighbors were. They bother no one and help to keep mice and other vermin from over breeding and entering homes. Do not allow them to be trapped and killed.
We support them in every way possible and their right to survive.
