Stop Classifying Animals as Property in Turkey
We, the undersigned, urge the Turkish government to take immediate action to recognize animals as sentient beings, not as property, under Turkish law.
Currently, animals in Turkey are classified as property, which means they do not have the legal protections they deserve as living beings. This classification allows for exploitation, mistreatment, and neglect of animals, with little legal recourse for their well-being. We believe that this outdated classification fails to acknowledge the emotional, cognitive, and physical needs of animals, and it denies them the rights and protections they deserve.
It is time for change. We demand that the Turkish government:
1. Reclassify animals as sentient beings, not property.
2. Strengthen animal protection laws to prevent abuse, exploitation, and neglect.
3. Ensure that the legal framework promotes animal welfare and ensures that animals' rights are protected.
We call on lawmakers to revise the legal status of animals in Turkey to reflect the moral and ethical obligations we have towards them as living creatures. By changing this legal classification, we will take a step towards a more compassionate and just society for all beings.
