Dedicate Acalanes High School Gym to Chris Huber

We are seeking community support to help our goal of naming the Acalanes High School Gym in the name of Chris Huber, beloved coach and teacher.

PROPOSAL RATIONALE TO NAME THE BIG GYM AFTER CHRIS HUBER

UCLA Basketball coaching legend John Wooden once said “What you are as a person is far more important that what you are as a basketball player”. While as a basketball coach, Chris Huber won championships, Coach Huber’s teaching approach off the court epitomized this philosophy which is why Acalanes students, faculty and parents over the last 25 years have revered Chris turning him into an Acalanes icon. This is why with Chris’ passing on January 22, 2021, I ask that the AUHSD School Board rename the Acalanes main gymnasium after Chris Huber pursuant to AR 7310.1 (1).
After a storied tenure as El Cerrito High School’s varsity basketball coach Chris Huber came to Acalanes High School in the fall of 2002 to teach PE and Math. Chris believed PE was an integral part of an academic education that introduced students to understanding and following rules, crafting a healthy balanced lifestyle and how working as a team accomplishes more than the individual sum of talent. Chris’ devotion to his students was legendary, often involving his own personal time to help a student achieve their objectives. Whether it was finding a “loaner” gym uniform or opening up the gym at 6:00 am for additional shot practice or giving badminton instruction to students at lunch, Chris did whatever was needed in order to maximize all students’ high school experience. Through his PE classes, Chris built connections to students and their parents that impacted the entire Lafayette community. The proof of this impact occurred every time Chris walked into the Acalanes gym, his presence would immediately set off a chorus of “Huuuuuuberrrrr”.
While he never was the boys head varsity basketball coach, Chris became the glue that held the Acalanes basketball program together. For 20 years, Chris was either the JV boys basketball coach or boys varsity assistant coach and even one year stepped in to be the varsity girls coach, shaping a generation of Acalanes athletes and modeling to these young adults the proper way to act in an adult world. Chris was a demanding coach holding high expectations for his players but always in an inclusive way, with a well defined path for players to rise to their potential.
We name buildings at Acalanes after people for a reason, to honor outstanding contributions that have impacted Acalanes High School and its students or the Lafayette community. Chris Huber has done both. Twenty years from now, Acalanes parents, faculty and alumni will walk into the big gym and say “this is where Chris Huber coached, taught and mentored me.” It is a fitting tribute to a great educator that Acalanes High School’s main gym become the Chris Huber Memorial Gymnasium.
