Commit to Trusting People You Don't Know

There are a lot of good people in the world. There are a lot of people, of any ethical orientation.

The good news is that there is a reliable correlation between economic development and lower fertility for all countries, so the world's population will level off.

We can make changes to how we live that would help poorer countries. What has prevented this is not knowing whether the people around us are good people, and wanting to avoid anything that would show that they are not.

This is why there has not been any reduction of working time despite huge increases in productivity and why we are not any happier.

Those around us know that there are limits to what we will do to help, even if we don't admit to those limits. It's more difficult to be sure that strangers also trust and respect those limits.

We can give people in other countries the opportunity to succeed.

Trust that this is all they want and that "they" want "us" to be happy too, even if what we do is a bit selfish.
