Scotland - Take the Lead in Saving Antarctica

Antarctica is the last great wilderness on Earth. While its land might be on the frosty side, its marine ecosystems are unique. They are the home of creatures that are found nowhere else on Earth. The Antarctic Ocean also forms a feeding ground for the great whales.

However, almost none of the Antarctic Ocean is protected. Overfishing threatens to ruin the ecosystems beyond repair if something is not done very soon. Commercial fish and krill operations are already moving into the area, with almost no control.

An international effort to create Antarctic marine reserves is essential. If nothing is done, the seals, whales, penguins, krill and fish are not likely to be around for much longer.

As a semi-independent member of both the EU and the UK, Scotland is in a unique position to pressurise both into taking real action. Ask the Scottish Government to take the lead in saving Antarctica.

We the undersigned ask that the Scottish Government show its real strengths by helping to lead the fight to save Antarctica. As a member of both the EU and the UK, which in turn are both separately members of the CCMLR, Scotland is in an excellent position to pressurise both into taking real action.

People in Scotland want to protect our world, and not just the part of it outside the door. Taking the lead on this issue would be an opportunity for the Scottish Government to show its genuine commitment to the environment.
