Investigate Baby Deer Killed by SWAT Team in Wisconsin
An Illinois family brought an abandoned baby fawn to The Society of St. Francis (a no kill animal shelter) in Kenosha, Wisconsin. A day before the fawn was scheduled to be transferred to a licensed wildlife rehabilitation facility, the St. Francis Society shelter was raided by nine Wisconson Department of Natural Resources agents and four deputy sheriffs- the fawn was shot and carried out in a body bag.
The 13 man team showed up at the shelter in multiple squad cars with heavily armed police officers. They corralled shelter workers near the picnic area and then set out in search of the fawn. The agents, Described as "armed to the teeth"), even had aerial photos which the warden “described getting himself into a position where he was able to see the fawn going in and out of the barn.” Shelter employee Ray Schulze told WISN 12 News, "It was like a SWAT team."
When a shelter employee asked why they did that, a Wisconson Department of Natural Resources officer replied 'That's our policy.' The fawn was, named Giggles, never had the benefit of a court hearing before it was shot and put in a body bag, rather than taken to a wildlife reserve as planned by the shelter.
Such exessive and unnessary force over an innocent baby deer should be throroughly investigated. Not only was this animal cruelty, but an excessive drain on taxpayer resources. We demand an investigation into such an extreme use of force and ask for policy changes that include non-lethal rehabilitation of deers at shelters and wildlife centers.
