Bring Nordic Model to Canada

On December 20th, 2013 the Supreme Court of Canada struck down the prostitution laws.  It gave the government one year to come up with a new law.  Legalizing brothels and decriminalizing prostitution in Canada will inevitably lead to increased sex trafficking and child exploitation.

In highly developed countries such as Sweden, Norway and Iceland there has been massive success in decriminalizing those being sold while criminalizing the purchase of sexual acts. The sex trade in Sweden has almost disappeared since they adopted the Nordic model and re-trained their police force in 1999.

The Nordic Model recognizes prostitution as an act of "male violence against women and children". This statement is supported by the staggering number of prostituted women who admit abuse is routine in their line of work.

There has been a significant reduction in Human Trafficking and Child prostitution in countries where Nordic Law has been implemented. Additionally, the number of women involved in prostitution has been radically reduced due to a lack of demand.

Meanwhile, in the Netherlands where Prostitution is legalized, Child Prostitution has tripled and researchers estimate that anywhere between 50 to 90 percent of 'sex workers' have been imported via human trafficking rings.

Taking into account the majority of prostituted women who claim they would exit the 'trade' if able, the Nordic Model also implements social programing to support those seeking rehabilitation, etc. These social programs also extend to men, discouraging the perception that women are commodities which can be bought.

TO THE HONOURABLE HOUSE OF COMMONS OF CANADA IN PARLIAMENT ASSEMBLED

WE THE UNDERSIGNED CITIZENS OF CANADA, draw attention to the House to the following:

WHEREAS it is internationally acknowledged that the median age of entry into prostitution is 12-14 years of age;

WHEREAS 92% of prostitutes would leave prostitution if they could;

WHEREAS the demand for commercial sex with women and children is the root cause for prostitution and trafficking for sexual purposes;

WHEREAS child prostitution and violence towards women have increased in countries where prostitution has been legalized;

THEREFORE your petitioners request that Parliament amend the Criminal Code to decriminalize the selling of sexual services and criminalize the purchasing of sexual services and provide support to those who desire to leave prostitution.

Canada introduced Nordic Model Legislation! Bill C-36 shifts the burden of criminality from prostituted women to where it belongs: on the johns and pimps. For the first time in Canadian history, sex purchasers would be brought out of the shadows and held accountable for their actions. If this Bill does not pass there is a serious chance of legalization in Canada. Now is the time to act! Please contact your MP and ask for their support for this legislation. Thank You!

Thank you for signing. We are up to almost 3500 signatures! There are only 14 days left before we will give the petition to MP Joy Smith who will present it to Parliament. We have created a video and InfoGraph. Please share as the more signatures we get the more likely the government will create just laws that protect the vulnerable and exploited!
