Over 100 girls between the age of 6 and 9 were mutilated in the state of Michigan and their attackers will walk free. Several Michigan physicians performed a medically unnecessary and painful surgery called
female genital mutilation. But it turns out
it's legal! But it's certainly not ethical or in line with the Hippocratic Oath that doctors take.
That's why we're asking the two medical licensing boards with which these doctors are licensed to revoke those licenses immediately.
This horrible operation went on for 12 years in Michigan and involved 7 other people. In all, over 100 girls were mutilated in a way that can never heal. These girls and women will live their whole lives with the physical and psychological damage of the procedure. Now, a judge has just ruled that it is
unconstitutional to ban female genital mutilation.
The procedure involves surgically removing the clitoral hood in order to suppress a girl's sexuality. From a scientific standpoint, it does not achieve the stated goal. But also, that is a heinous goal.
The actual result is lifelong damage. These girls have a painful procedure that they don't need which carries a lot of risk and most of the time they aren't even told what's happening at the time, if ever. One girl said she couldn't
even walk after the procedure. But ultimately, the parents of these girls told them not to talk about the procedure.
Even worse, the doctors involved are still able to practice medicine. Please join in calling on medical licensing boards to revoke the license of any physician who has performed female genital mutilation.
Girls are
suffering and dying all across the globe from this horrible practice meant to stifle their sexuality.
Until this ruling, the U.S. was looked to as a leader in terms of decrying the heinous practice. Now, we don't have a leg to stand on. It's up to us to change that and while this important issue continues to move through the court system, we must call on other institutions to stand against it.
Dr. Fakhruddin Attar, an internal medicine doctor and Jumana Nagarwala, an ER doctor are the physicians who performed the attacks.
Please join me in asking the American Board of Internal Medicine and the American Board of Physician Specialties to revoke these two physician's licenses.
