Secondary students have the right to know the whole truth about American History

I request that the secondary students in Utah be required to read the following books in their history classes. Understanding the complexities of American history prepares students to confront discrimination in today's life. With attention to diversity, equity and inclusion, I recommend the following books as mandatory readings and a part of class discussions:

1- The Warmth of Other Suns : By Isabel Wilkerson
2- Killers of the Flower Moon : by David Grann
3- Caste : by Isabel Wilkerson

In some schools, the libraries have similar books but they are not mandatory reading materials.

In addition, I demand that teachers receive specific training in order to facilitate and engage students in conciliatory classroom discussions. There are many resources available for this type of training, such as: "Facing History and Ourselves" ( facinghistory.org).

In order to promote long lasting change, it is vital that we prepare the next generation of Americans. I hope you will consider signing this petition.

Thank you,

Shahin Leistner
