The president of Last Chance for Animals, Chris De Rose, describes live export as "a cruel and immoral trade in living beings: a trade that brings great shame not only on Australia but on humanity itself."Â
The longest live animal transport journey in the world is from Australia to the Middle East. Animals can be onboard ships for over 6 weeks. During that time, they may be subjected to near-lethal temperatures and extremely high levels of ammonia. They will be kept in cramped conditions so that they can do little more than stand or lie down.

Vets Against Live Export (VALE) believe that the live export trade for slaughter exposes millions of animals to significant and unnecessary pain, suffering and abuse and that it is important to correct the public’s impression that all vets support live export.
Animal welfare in Australia is a joke.
It was 42°C (107.6° F) in the shade onThursday 26th January 2012. At a feedlot near Perth West Australia thousands of sheep were loaded into trucks and transported approx 60 minutes to the Port of Fremantle.

Dear Prime Minister Gillard, the Honorable Martin Ferguson, and The Honorable Joe Ludwig,
It is with horror that I have found that the Australian government allows the live export of cattle, sheep, and other animals to various countries. These journeys can take in excess of three weeks, during which time many animals die from failure to eat or dehydration (amongst other causes).Â
I was appalled that a country such as Australia, that prides itself on its standards for animal welfare, allows such a gross travesty to those standards to occur to millions of animals every year.
I urge the Australian government to uphold its animal welfare standards, and immediately cease this practice.
I further lodge my intent to boycott Australia until live animal exports cease. I will not travel to Australia, and/or will also encourage family and friends to choose another holiday destination.Â

Yours Sincerely, Â
