Horse abuse in WV,near Charles Town Race track
- af: Jeanne Morton
- mottagare: Everett Boober, Sheriff, Sheriff Jefferson County, WV
Thank you to all who have signed this petition. Unfortunately our efforts have been ignored, both by the sheriff, prosecutor, and local politicians. Danley pleaded no contest, got a small fine and probation. May still train, not own horses. Sadly NONE of the 23 witnesses who were willing to testify were called by the prosecution. In addition when 6 witnesses showed up for the hearing none were called and the hearing delayed. It was rescheduled for Sept., 11. and then moved to August 23 with no notification to any of the witnesses. On August 21, I called the magistrate's office to reverify that the hearing was still set for 9/11., and was told it was. We read about the hearing and results on Fri. August 24His attorney was quoted as saying this was no Michael Vick situation. I contend these horses suffered longer than the dogs that Michael Vick abused. I have reliable information that he is training on a farm near Purcellville, Va. His wife was not charged, so she may still own. Again, many thanks. Hopefully Loudoun Co. will do a better job of protecting these animals than Jefferson Co., WV Jeanne
ORIGINAL POSTING:
Dennis Danley has been charged with 10 counts of animal cruelty. Sheriff's deputies identifed 5 dead and 10 malnurished horses. Unbelievably, the horses continue to remain in his custody. At least one other has died since his arrest. The law provides for the horses to be seized and volunteers are available to care for them until the court makes a decision re: them. Sheriff Boober has not complied with the law. Details of this sad situation are available on the PETA website. Documentation is available at Herald-mail.com. I am requesting your help in petitioning Sheriff Boober to seize the animals and place them in proper care until the court determines how this situation will be resolved. eboober@jcsdwv.com
Mr. Danley was charged and convicted in 1997, Loudon Co., Va for the same offense. Private individuals had been providing feed from their own funds. The incident was reported Feb. 7 and the situation was not investigated until March 14. We had 2 severe winter storms, ice and snow, during this time period. Mr. Danley is a breeder and trainer of race horses. Several owners have learned of the situation and removed their animals. There may be other owners out of state who are not aware of the condition of their horses. Following his arrest he stopped allowing volunteers to enter the property and provide food for the animals. There are 20 mares ready to foal. A hearing date has not yet been set. We understand some horses have been removed at night. Neighbors have observed him burying bodies at night as well.
By the time this comes to trial, there may be few horses left. Originally 60 horses were counted.
Please, we need your help. E-mail or fax Sheriff Boober and request him to use the law to remove these animals. Contact the county prosecutor's office 304-728-3243 and request them to monitor this case. If you know of other charges this person has been charged with in other areas, please contact petitioner, or the prosecutor's office.
