The beautiful pink dolphins of Hong Kong are already endangered but they could soon slip into extinction, according to a report in The Star.com. An expansion plan for Chek Lap Kok airport may put pink dolphins north of Hong Kong’s Lantau Island at significant risk.
The report stated: "The dolphins have already suffered devastating declines. Since 2003, individuals living in Hong Kong waters have dropped from 158 to around 60. The area’s notoriously bad pollution can take most of the blame, but conservationists blame ferry traffic, overfishing, and habitat loss due to construction as well. They argue that a proposed expansion to Chek Lap Kok airport might be the final straw."

Measures they could take include the creation of a marine reserve to protect the species. In addition, all industrial expansion should be stopped within critical habitat areas - and this includes the development of Chek Lap Kok airport. Industrial outfall and pollution around Hong Kong’s Lantau Island needs to be both monitored and managed. The government should also work closer with conservationists to help stop boat strikes.
