Save Pete the Moose

David Lawrence, a retired dairy farmer and self-educated naturalist, has gained a growing reputation for nurturing orphaned moose, allowing them to reach maturity and live within a protected 600 acre preserve. These animals are living as they would in the wild, mating with other moose and rearing their offspring as in nature.

State laws prohibit the rehabilitation of a wild animal for more than three days and also prohibit the confinement of a wild animal. David is vehement in his belief there is a higher moral purpose to be served other than committing an animal to a sure and lingering death of starvation or as prey to a predator.

Mr. Lawrence has now fallen under the scrutiny of the Vermont Fish and Wildlife Department who, thus far, has been cavalier in their interpretation of the existing laws. At the heart of this matter is Pete, an orphan who had been attacked by dogs. At the time he was placed under David's care, Pete was only days old. He is now a strapping 600 pound juvenile, well on his way to full maturity.

Mr. Lawrence needs your support in his endeavors to negotiate a reasoned approach to this dilemma. Shall the State reconsider and allow a program such as David's to exist or will these animals be condemned to a sure and lingering death?
