Stop the U.S. Government From Erasing Transgender History in the Stonewall Uprising's Legacy

  • by: Care2 Team

In a shocking and unjust move, the United States National Park Service has erased any mention of transgender people from the history of the Stonewall Uprising, a key moment in the LGBTQ rights movement. The "T" in "LGBTQ+" has been removed, as has the word "queer," further erasing the contributions of transgender individuals like Marsha P. Johnson and Sylvia Rivera, who played vital roles in the Stonewall riots. This erasure is a deliberate attempt to marginalize transgender people and deny them their rightful place in history.

Sign the petition to demand that the National Park Service correct this mistake and restore the history of transgender people at Stonewall.

Marsha P. Johnson and Sylvia Rivera, both transgender activists, were on the front lines of the Stonewall Uprising. These courageous individuals not only contributed to the uprising but also founded the Street Transvestite Action Revolutionaries (STAR), a group dedicated to supporting homeless trans youth in New York City. Erasing their legacy and the legacy of all transgender people from this pivotal moment in history is an act of deliberate harm.

The LGBTQ+ community, and the nation as a whole, must acknowledge and honor the contributions of transgender individuals, especially those like Johnson and Rivera who paved the way for the rights we continue to fight for today. Transgender people have always been a central part of the LGBTQ+ movement, and we cannot allow them to be written out of history.

Sign the petition to demand the reinstatement of transgender people's history in the Stonewall Uprising and ensure that this vital part of our shared history is preserved for future generations.
