There has been raging debate in Ontario for many years about GRAVEL PITS. The biggest pit to be stopped was in Melancthon, however now we have one proposed in a township which is supposed to be in the GREEN BELT. They want to take more FARM land and turn it into a USELESS PIT!!!

The Nelson Aggregate company has applied to extract 1,000,000 tonnes of sand and gravel per year from below the established water table in Adjala-Tosorontio, in an area where several pits already exist. At this site, every hour, 42 twenty‐two ton diesel trucks will travel at “…design speed of 100 km/hr.”* Through adj/tos – 1 truck approximately every 85 seconds. This will occur daily from 6am to 7pm, 3 seasons/year!

This means the following:
Well Water will be depleted
Drinking Water will be CONTAMINATED
There are sensitive waterways nearby that will be affected.

The bobolink is a grassland bird listed as threatened in Ontario. For habitat they rely in large part on the hayfields and pastures created and maintained by farmers in southern Ontario. Currently there are twenty nesting pairs in the fields of the proposed GRAVEL PIT.

There will be permanent destruction to animal habitat and irreversible loss of farmland for future generations. We are supposed to be in a GREEN BELT area, which is meant to protect FARM LAND.
