Inspectors Told to Wear Hazmat Suits at Home With 47 Hoarded Animals

Authorities in Ontario, Canada recently rescued 47 animals from a woman's condo, where she had collected 10 cats, 19 rats, nine birds, four degus, two hedgehogs, a guinea pig, a chinchilla and a tortoise.

Officials first attempted contacting the woman about neglect and hoarding of the animals in May 2024, but it took several weeks for her to respond. When she finally did, she admitted she was no longer living at the home due to the clutter and sanitation issues she had created.

When the woman finally allowed inspectors to come and examine the 47 animals, they found no litter boxes on the premises. Instead, feces, urine, and dead flies carpeted the home's floors, and the place had a "decaying smell."

In fact, the stench was so horrible, officials warned inspectors to "wear a hazmat suit" when entering the property.

Even worse - the woman tried to hide from authorities how many animals, exactly, were at the home, so that they would think the number was substantially lower. This included attempting to hide a dead animal from inspectors.

Authorities spent several months trying to work with her to improve the living situation for the animals, but unfortunately the woman admitted that her mental health was too unstable to properly clean and sanitize the living environment.

Since then, authorities have rescued all 47 animals and provided them with extensive veterinary help to nurse them back to health.

While it is heartbreaking to know that this woman was enduring a mental health crisis, she also should not be allowed to live with or own animals in the future. Even when people have the best of intentions, if they cannot properly care for a pet, they should not be allowed to have them.

Pets are dependent on us to do our best for them. Since this woman, sadly, has shown that she is unable to provide for their needs, she should not be allowed to own pets again. Sign the petition to protect future animals.
