Big Oil company ConocoPhillips wants to start a massive, decades-long oil drilling project on Alaska's North Slope to get at the estimated 600 million barrels of oil hidden in the ground. If they succeed, it would create 9.2 million tons of carbon pollution — the equivalent of adding another 2 million cars worth of fossil fuel pollution into an atmosphere that's already warming at a very alarming rate.
The project was first approved by the Trump administration in 2020 and has been on hold ever since as the oil company buys and bullies its way through a slew of legal challenges. Now the White House is expected to issue a decision in the coming weeks.

On top of the damage to the environment, the project will cause, many in the Native Inupiaq communities around the proposed drilling site are very concerned about the impact on the caribou's migration paths and pollution of the air and water from the toxic chemicals used in oil extraction.
"The Willow project would have a devastating effect on public lands and our climate, and approving it after passing the largest climate bill in history would be a giant step in reverse," said the Sierra Club in a statement.
