In late Oct. 2014, Oakland City Council voted to expand the The Nuisance Eviction Ordinance, upon the suggestion of Oakland City Attorney Barbara Parker. The ordinance allows the city to force landlords to evict anyone who may have only been accused of a prostitution-related offense.
Please sign the petition to tell the Oakland City Council to repeal this ordinance: Don't force landlords to evict sex workers! Tell Oakland to show respect by including sex worker voices when considering policies regarding them.
Sex workers are just trying to make a living. Criminalizing sex workers does nothing to make them safer. Many sex workers are mothers supporting their children. Forcing sex workers out of their homes will simply push them farther underground into dangerous and violent environments -- or force them to be homeless.
Thee ordinance strips tenants of their right to due process and gives police even more arbitrary enforcement powers. Under this ordinance, anyone can be accused and evicted.
It's time to end discrimination against sex workers. Please sign the petition to send a message to Oakland: Repeal your discriminatory laws targeting sex workers!

Oakland City Attorney Barbara Parker, We the undersigned urge you to consider sex worker voices when creating policies targeting them. The ordinance allowing the city to force landlords to evict sex workers is discriminatory and harmful -- it will do nothing to make sex workers safer. Many sex workers are mothers supporting their children. This ordinance could contribute to the epidemic of homelessness in the Bay Area by forcing sex workers from their homes. We urge you to repeal this discriminatory ordinance.
