UWA Student Services and Amenities Fee (SSAF) should be OPTIONAL

We believe that this SSAF should be optional and therefore paid for by those people to choose to use the provided services.

Five things you didn't know about the new compulsory UWA Student Services and Amenities Fee (SSAF):

1. New Government legislation does NOT require that UWA charge a SSAF it simply gives UWA the option to charge it.

2. All enrolled students have to pay the fee (with few exceptions) irrelevant of whether you use the services that the fee is paying for.

3. International students, who already pay $29,000+ p. a. for tuition now also have to pay the SSAF ($198 p. a.)

4. You have to pay the first half of the fee ($99) on 02/04/12 or the university reserves the right to hold back certificates/diplomas etc. until the fee is paid.

5. 70% of the fee goes towards the Guild and 30% towards sports facilities.

Previously this fee was optional and was paid for by people who actually used the services.
We, the undersigned, believe that the UWA Student Services and Amenities Fee (SSAF) should be an OPTIONAL fee paid by those students who wish to make use of the services that the fee supports.  The new COMPULSORY fee means that every enrolled UWA student (with few exceptions) has to pay $198 p.a. in addition to their tuition fees.  This is particularly unfair for international students who are already paying $29,000+ p.a. and so may not be able to afford an additional $198 p.a.

We believe that the previous system (prior to 2012) was much more appropriate, whereby students gained access to the guild and sport facilities by paying an OPTIONAL SSAF. Therefore, students who actually use the guild and sports services are the ones who will pay for them.

We are asking you to use your power to reinstate the OPTIONAL SSAF in place of the unfair COMPULSORY SSAF.
