SD – Ensure Protection of Animals Through An Animal Cruelty Registry

Penalties seem to be escalating for the malicious acts of animal cruelty and South Dakota has become the 50th state to sign this new law.  Despite harsher penalties, the cruelty against animals seem to be unending.  This state has been known to have issues with cockfighting among other torturous acts against poor defenseless beings.  Read more at  http://www.humanesociety.org/news/news_briefs/2014/03/south-dakota-lawmakers-enact-stronger-animal-cruelty-penalties-031414.html?referrer=https://search.yahoo.com/ & http://legis.sd.gov/Statutes/Codified_Laws/DisplayStatute.aspx?Statute=40-1&Type=Statute

In addition to stricter penalties for animal abuse, cruelty and neglect, a crucial tool in stopping such crimes is to create an animal cruelty registry.  Such a proposed database would be similar in stature to that of other databases for child abusers and sex offenders with serious, lifetime implications.  Any person convicted of animal abuse, cruelty or abandonment of any sort needs to be listed on this registry.  To be accurate, the abuser’s information needs to be updated on a regular basis.  Furthermore, any person listed on this database should remain there for a lifetime, being banned from any future animal ownership, working with or caring for them as a means of protecting future lives of defenseless animals.

The effort in this petition is to encourage South Dakota State Legislators to implement and strictly enforce an animal cruelty database as a means of protecting poor defenseless animals statewide and hopefully eventually nationwide.  You can help with this effort by signing and sharing this petition, adding your own thoughts and comments to voice out your concerns for those who cannot speak out or protect themselves.

South Dakota State Legislators – With the current efforts to increase animal cruelty penalties, we strongly urge you to also implement and strictly enforce an animal cruelty registry.  Such a tool would be crucial in protecting animals from abuse, cruelty and neglect. Speak out for those who cannot speak or protect themselves.
