It is no doubt that mental health has became a staple of this generation but how much are we willing to do to help those who are struggling to fix their issues?
About 8% of victims of kidnappings, or any form of prolonged abuse develops Stockholm syndrome over their abuser or captor.
Stockholm syndrome is a psychological phenomenon in which a hostage or victim develops positive feelings such as love, sympathy, loyalty, twords the perpatrator or even starts to defend the perpetrator from law enforcement or believes that what their abuser did had some sort of moral behind it, and creates excuses for the actions of their perpetrator
Stockholm syndrome is developed when a victim/hostage is exposed to prolonged periods of isolation caused by a perpetrator. This phenomenon can also be developed by how helpless a hostage feels in a situation, or cognitive distortion.(A biased or inaccurate thought process that can negatively impact the way a person thinks and can effect how they act on their emotions.). How the abuser treats the victim and the mental illness past and trauma history of the victim may impact their vulnerability to this illness as well.
Although it is rare, it is very real and very serious. A lot of people suffering from Stockholm syndrome are convinced that the people who harmed them did nothing wrong and that they are only human and make mistakes. And most victims are never truly given justice due to the illness impacting their thought and trauma process.
