For too long, wild animals have been subjected to cruel, inhumane treatment in traveling circuses, and Washington state finally has the chance to end it. A Senate bill, known as the Circus Bill, would ban the use of elephants, nonhuman primates, big cats, and bears in traveling circus acts across the state. It's a step forward for animal welfare, public safety, and a brighter future for our wild friends.

Wild animals endure pain and suffering even in the most well-intentioned traveling shows. Most of their days are spent confined in cramped, barren cages, unable to express natural behaviors. They are forced to perform terrifying, painful tricks – often through fear-based training – that leave them physically and emotionally scarred. This is not entertainment. It is exploitation.
But this bill offers hope. Washington has an opportunity to say NO to these cruel practices and embrace a more humane approach to entertainment. By passing SB 5065, Washington would join eight other states, including California, Colorado, and Massachusetts, that have already passed similar laws to protect wild animals in circuses. The bill does not ban circuses altogether – it simply ensures that performances no longer rely on the exploitation of animals.
