Justice for Lacie

When you first see and hear these three words, you may wonder,

"What does Justice for Lacie mean?"

"What is Justice for Lacie about?"

"What can I do to help?"

"Aren't all inmates guilty?"

"What happened to Lacie?"

To answer the first question, I went to the dictionary and found that "Justice for Lacie" is defined this way:

Justice - the administration of the law or authority

for - intended to be given to

Lacie - a woman who was falsely accused and convicted of a crime SHE DID NOT COMMIT. As a result, she was sentenced to one eight-year and three 12 years to life sentences.

What is this about? This petition and request for your signature are about letting the lawmakers of Colorado know about an injustice that needs to be corrected.

What can I do to help? Read the short explanation below and then we ask that you please sign and share.

Aren't all inmates guilty? No, they are not! And Lacie has stood her ground for innocence since the first day she was arrested. In fact, without being granted clemency, the only way out for her is to admit guilt. She is unwilling to do that.

What happened to Lacie? We are so glad you asked!

On April 1, 2009,  Lacie Nelson also became known as offender #145499 and took residence at the Denver Women's Correctional Facility (DWCF) in Colorado. This happened after 32 agonizing months of trusting our current legal system and its process. Lacie was convinced and she believed that because she was truly innocent of the accusations that were made against her the truth would certainly set her free.

The system failed Lacie.

The story behind Justice for Lacie includes others. She was not the only one falsely accused of these horrific crimes. Please join us and SIGN THIS PETITION and give Lacie the opportunity to be reunited with her sons, her grandson, her family, her friends, and her supporters who have stood by and watched helplessly, not knowing what to do.

Throughout the years, Lacie has been forced to trust a system that has failed her multiple times. Even through those challenges, Lacie discovered numerous ways to better herself and encourage those around her.

Surprisingly, these experiences have allowed her to pursue opportunities without becoming bitter.

Through these years she has dedicated herself to learning and helping others.

Lacie has achieved more than most people accomplish in a lifetime "on the outside".

For example, Lacie has:

  • Completed a four-year seminary-level program for Christian Leadership through TUMI - The Urban Ministry Institute
  • Earned an Associates Degree from Trinidad State University
  • Acquired enough hours to receive her Cosmetology License
  • Obtained numerous certificates through training that includes becoming a recovery coach offered by Mental Health of America.

Her accomplishments "on the inside" are honorable and her reputation among the staff and residents at DWCF often provides her with requests to serve or work on specific projects. During her years at DWCF, she was instrumental in creating a guide of resources for women who are preparing to leave prison.  As a result of her efforts, during the pandemic when work ceased for the inmates and daily lockdowns became the norm, someone had to be hired from "the outside" to fill all the positions Lacie had been doing.

Additionally, she was invited to be a part of the Chapel Build Committee. This was a result of the years she spent with New Beginnings Lutheran Church and the influence she had on many as she served as a member and as part of the church council. New Beginnings is the only church physically established inside the gates of DWCF and Lacie has been a cornerstone to its ability to reach the women she has been incarcerated with over the years. Lacie courageously strives to assist in providing support to the challenges her fellow inmates experience each day.

All of these accomplishments have brought her to a place of being a role model.
Her ability to influence those around her is recognized and regularly sought after.

In 2020, at the start of the pandemic, when an overlooked lung infection worsened and she began coughing up blood, Lacie was again denied release for her medical condition. Her health continued to fail until one year later, she had two lobes of her right lung removed.

It was during her month-long stay while recovering in the infirmary at the prison that Lacie began a new effort to bring hope and vision to the women at DWCF. During her recovery, Vision of Hope DOC was birthed and she began coordinating efforts to provide prescription eyeglasses to women in need.  She learned through this process that "Seeing is Freeing" for many of those who are truly able to "see" for the first time since being incarcerated.

You can read more about

Vision of Hope DOC and how "Seeing is Freeing" click here:

As of January 2023 and almost 22 months later, over 100 of the 750 women have benefited from her efforts. This is equivalent to over 10% of the population at Denver Women's Correctional Facility and the requests for quality prescription eyeglasses continue.

Lacie has made an impact where she has been forced to reside all these years.

We are hoping that the next season of impact in Lacie's life is for her to finally be declared innocent and exonerated of the charges brought against her.
