The SAVE Act Targets Married Women and Low-Income People, Making It Harder to Vote

The right to vote is the foundation of democracy, yet a dangerous new bill in the U.S. Congress threatens to strip millions of Americans of this fundamental right.

If passed, the so-called Safeguard American Voter Eligibility (SAVE) Act would impose extreme and unnecessary barriers to voter registration. It is targeting anyone who has ever changed their name or who doesn't have access to very specific documents, such as a passport. This would disproportionately harm married women, LGBTQ+ individuals, lower-income citizens, rural voters, and the elderly.

This is voter suppression, plain and simple. Sign now to help us stop this attack on U.S. democracy!

The SAVE Act would require all Americans to provide proof of citizenship using highly specific forms of documentation, such as passports or birth certificates, in order to register to vote or update their voter registration. But more than 140 million Americans do not have a passport. On top of that, approximately 69 million women who have changed their last name after marriage do not have a birth certificate that matches their legal name. This would also impact trans and non-binary individuals who may have updated their legal name on some documents, but not yet on others.

This bill makes no accommodations for these citizens, effectively blocking them casting a ballot in federal elections.

In addition to its restrictive documentation requirements, the SAVE Act would also eliminate online voter registration, ban voter registration drives, and require Americans to present original documents in person just to update their information. This would be a disaster for the more than 60 million Americans who live in rural communities, where government offices are often far away and difficult to access.

We cannot allow politicians to manipulate the electoral system to silence millions of voters. Congress must reject the SAVE Act and, instead, focus on expanding voting rights - not restricting them.

We demand legislation that makes it easier for all eligible Americans to vote, such as automatic voter registration, expanded vote-by-mail options, and protections against voter intimidation. Sign this petition to tell Congress: Protect our democracy. Stop the SAVE Act.
