U.S. Hospitals Must Stop Criminalizing New Moms for Medication Given During Labor

Every day across the United States, hospitals administer drugs like fentanyl and benzodiazepines to birthing mothers to manage pain and anxiety. Alarmingly, these very medications are leading to criminalization and custody battles when hospitals report mothers based on non-confirmed positive drug tests. These tests often detect the medications that hospitals themselves administer. Shockingly, not a single state mandates hospitals to confirm drug test results before making these reports.

Sign the petition to urge U.S. Congress to require all U.S. hospitals to confirm all drug test results before making any reports to child welfare services!

Hospitals, without mandatory confirmation of drug test results, have reported mothers based on flawed tests, leading to devastating family separations and unwarranted child welfare investigations. This practice must end.

The lack of federal regulation around the confirmation of drug tests in hospitals is a glaring oversight, and has lead to unjust consequences for countless families.

We must fight to protect mothers from wrongful accusations and ensure that medical practices do not harm those they are designed to serve.

Sign this petition today to urge immediate action that safeguards the rights and well-being of every family impacted by these practices!
