Petition for an Evening Organic Chemistry Class at Laney College

Due to the high number of students who attend Laney College in order to further their career, change careers, or finish up degrees, an evening course in first semester Organic Chemistry needs to be offered by the Peralta Community College System in the Spring of 2009. This will accommodate the students who need to work and allows for continued progress along the chemistry curriculum without unnecessary gaps. Please sign the following letter if you want the chance to take Organic Chemistry this fall but can't take the one section that is currently offered.
As students at Laney College, we, the undersigned, are concerned about the lack of evening classes offered at Laney College for working students. Which is why we strongly urge you to support this student population by offering a first semester organic chemistry class in the spring of 2009.

Evening classes are especially important for students seeking to advance or change their careers, and for students who are working full time but need to finish their college degrees. Without an evening organic chemistry class students will loose the opportunity to further their chemistry education in a timely fashion.

We propose a course that is at the same time as the Chemistry 1B course currently taught by Matthew Stavis on Monday, Wednesday, and Thursday Evenings from 6pm to 9pm.  I also propose that Matthew Stavis teach the Organic Chemistry course if it is offered.  He has developed an excellent rapport and relationship with his students. His dedication to chemistry and the teaching of is evident in the quality of the classroom experience he provides.

Thank you for taking the time to take our request into consideration.
