Tell Secretary Vilsack to Stop Sabotaging Organic!
Despite receiving hundreds of thousands of letters in opposition, President Obama's USDA approved Monsanto's new "Roundup Ready" alfalfa. GM alfalfa will massively increase the use of Monsanto's Roundup herbicide and is certain to contaminate organic dairy, alfalfa sprouts and honey. Then, within a week, USDA Secretary (and former Biotech Governor of the Year) Tom Vilsack dropped another Frankenbomb on organic, announcing that GM sugar beets would be planted this Spring in defiance of a federal court ban issued to protect organic sugar beet seeds and related crops, such as kale and table beets, from contamination. This is outrageous! We've got to stop the sabotaging of organic!

We the undersigned are very disappointed and concerned that the USDA is letting Monsanto distribute two new genetically modified crops, alfalfa and sugar beets, this Spring. Genetically modified foods haven't been adequately safety tested, but we know from the research that has been done that genetically modified foods are more likely to trigger allergies; could cause cancer, liver damage and reproductive problems; are less nutritious than normal food; and are produced using more herbicides.
Given the dangers of genetic modification, the USDA should place a moratorium on Monsanto's crops. They shouldn't be grown until they're proven safe. No new genetically modified crops should be allowed without long-term independent studies of their health and environmental impacts. The greatest concern is that genetically modified crops will permanently contaminate the organic and non-GMO seed supply. Experts warn that contamination is inevitable.
Secretary Vilsack's talk of "coexistence" was a fraud. The idea that the USDA would regulate GMOs to prevent contamination was a false promise designed to divide the organic community and weaken opposition to GMOs. Organic leaders won't be fooled again. We're united now and will fight until we win the only real protection for organic: a ban on GMOs.

The fight against GMOs is a long one, but we will not back down. We demand Obama and Vilsack be held accountable for decisions, and know that we won't stop fighting until they stand up for farmers and the people, and not Monsanto and Big Ag.
