ExxonMobil Must Face Reality on Global Warming

At the most recent ExxonMobil shareholders meeting, the Union of Concerned Scientists (UCS) asked the fossil fuel company to join the nearly 200 nations of the world who now agree with scientists on the urgent need to limit global warming to 2°C or less. CEO Rex Tillerson not only denies the scientific basis of this goal, but also renewed his attacks on climate science models that warn of increasingly severe consequences should we fail to take sufficient action to limit heat-trapping emissions from fossil fuels.

Representatives of UCS also asked ExxonMobil to respond to calls to stop funding the American Legislative Exchange Council's (ALEC) efforts to sow uncertainty about global warming among politicians. While other oil and gas companies have severed ties with ALEC, Tillerson described ALEC as "very useful."

Rather than act responsibility on global warming, ExxonMobil is lashing out against those of us who seek to hold the company accountable. UCS stood up to ExxonMobil at the company's annual shareholders meeting in Dallas – now it's your turn!

Tell ExxonMobil it's time to face reality and stop blocking progress on global warming.
I was dismayed to see you double down on ExxonMobil's long history of deception on global warming at your annual shareholder meeting this past May in Dallas.

You falsely claimed that the international community's goal of limiting global warming to 2°C "has no scientific basis." We are already experiencing the serious consequences of global warming - from rising sea levels to extreme heat and drought. Scientists warn us that without urgent action to limit heat-trapping emissions from fossil fuels, these impacts will only grow worse.

While other major oil and gas companies, including BP and Shell, have stopped funding the American Legislative Exchange Council's (ALEC) efforts to sow uncertainty about global warming among politicians, you described ExxonMobil's relationship with ALEC as "very useful." This simply does not align with ExxonMobil's claim to no longer fund or support those who dispute the reality of global warming.

It's time for ExxonMobil to face reality and stop standing in the way of progress on global warming!
