Dothan Needs a New Animal Shelter

"The greatness of a nation and its moral progress can be judged by the way its animals are treated."

Please join Save A Pet in petitioning City of Dothan Officials to allocate sufficient revenue from the 1% sales tax increase (effective January 1, 2007) to build a new animal shelter.

Most visitors to Dothan Animal Shelter don't stay long and few return.  From cracked and leaking walls and tile, to mold and rot, the shelter is a disgrace.  Numerous ventilation, drainage and electrical issues pose health risks not only to the animals and workers, but to the visiting public.  The aged and deteriorated facility is completely inadequte to meet the animal services needs of Dothan and the surrounding communities its serves (Webb, Taylor, Kinsey, Cowarts, Cottonwood, Madird and Gordon).

The desperate conditions at Dothan Animal Shelter contribute significantly to the high euthansasia rate.  The public simply does not want to visit such a depressing place.  Animals have little chance of adoption.  It is chiefly through off-site adotions that Save A Pet is able to rehome many shelter animals.

The mayor's proposed allocation of $400,000 over three years is a drop in the bucket that amounts to merely patching an outdated, poorly designed, undersized, diseased and rotting facility.  A temporary fix and a waste of taxpayers' money.

Dothan needs decent housing for its lost and homeless animals more urgently than it needs more studies and leisure services.  Please join Save A Pet in requesting that the City of Dothan properly provide for its shelter animals by builidng a new animal shelter and appropriately staffing the new facility with enough workers to care for the animals and the new facility.
