Wood turtle populations are in decline, but the species is only on the threatened list. A group in Wild Virginia wants the turtle to benefit from endangered species protections before it's too late.
Wood turtles are slow to mature, and the pet trade, poaching and increasing predator populations are threatening the species' sustainability. This particular turtle requires a combination of wetlands and upland habitats for its survival, and increasing urbanization and deforestation is limiting its environment. The wood turtle is already listed as endangered in Iowa, but it is threatened in most of the other 17 states it calls home.
Please sign the petition to urge Fish and Wildlife to grant endangered species protections to the wood turtle.
We, the undersigned, are concerned about the future of wood turtles.
