Oppose the Radical Right's Choice for the Supreme Court!

The radical right torpedoed the nomination of Harriet Miers because she didn’t have a proven record of being a staunch ‘movement’ conservative, dedicated to carrying out their political agenda on the bench.

But the far right is now positively giddy about the nomination of Samuel Alito – calling it a “grand slam” pick by Bush. This is no doubt due to Alito’s 15-year history of judicial decisions that have advanced their pet causes - chipping away at the right to privacy, weakening laws like the Family and Medical Leave Act that protect workers, and limiting corporate accountability for pollution and employment discrimination.

If confirmed to the Supreme Court, Samuel Alito would be among its most conservative members. We cannot count on him to make decisions based on the law, rather than his own extremely conservative political views.

Urge your senators to oppose the Alito nomination! Send a letter telling them to protect our fundamental rights and freedoms by preserving the balance on the Supreme Court.

Dear [your senators]:

Samuel Alito, President Bush’s nominee to take the seat held by Justice Sandra Day O’Connor, would move the Supreme Court to the far right. He has a 15-year judicial record in which he has repeatedly issued rulings that are hostile to women’s rights, workers’ rights, civil rights and privacy rights.

Alito has voted to overturn laws passed by Congress, including voting against enforcing a law giving state employees family medical leave rights, and voting to overturn a federal ban on machine guns, a law that has been on the books since 1934. Legal scholars fear Alito would use the same reasoning to overturn laws that prohibit discrimination, ensure safe workplaces, and regulate pollution.

Alito has even ruled that women must notify their husbands before obtaining an abortion. In overturning Alito’s decision, Sandra Day O’Connor wrote: “Women do not lose their constitutionally protected liberty when they marry. The Constitution protects all individuals, male or female, married or unmarried, from the abuse of governmental power, even where that power is employed for the supposed benefit of a member of the individual's family.”

I urge you to reject the nomination of Judge Samuel Alito to this critical position on the Supreme Court. In order for the fundamental rights and freedoms of all Americans to be protected, it's essential that the Supreme Court's delicate balance is preserved.

Thank you for considering my views.

Sincerely,
[your name]
