Tell President Obama: No deals on Keystone XL!

Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper recently wrote President Obama promising to set climate goals -- if Obama will approve Harper's dirty tar sands pipeline. Here's the problem: the expansion of the tar sands makes it impossible to meet the climate goals Canada has already set!

Canada's record of broken climate promises speaks for itself. The Harper administration has consistently failed to meet its carbon reduction targets, eliminated some of its biggest climate programs, withdrawn from the Kyoto Protocol (the only country in the world to do so), and even silenced government scientists' ability to speak to the press.

Urge President Obama to not fall for Harper's empty promises -- Keystone XL will always be a climate disaster!
Dear President Obama,

In recent weeks, your administration has made significant progress in honoring your commitment to protecting our climate, such as finalizing the new carbon pollution limits for power plants.

However, I am concerned that Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper has reportedly promised to enforce stricter climate policies in Canada in exchange for your approval of the Keystone XL pipeline. Making such a deal on Keystone XL would be terrible for our climate, and undermine the great progress you've been making.

First of all, the greenhouse gas emissions from the Keystone XL pipeline would be far too big to mitigate: Tar sands are at least 22 percent more carbon polluting than conventional oil used in the U.S., and they lie under Canada's 1.2 billion acre boreal forest, a major carbon sink. Keystone XL alone would emit at least 181 million metric tons of carbon dioxide each year, the emissions equivalent of putting an additional 37.7 million cars on the road. By comparison, Canada only has about 26 million cars in the entire country. There's simply no way Canada can mitigate this much carbon pollution. This pipeline would be directly responsible for expanding the development of the dirtiest fuel of the planet, and approving it would be a disaster for the climate.

Secondly, Prime Minister Stephen Harper has a terrible climate record: His administration has consistently failed to meet its carbon reduction targets, has eliminated some of its biggest climate programs, and has even silenced government scientists' ability to speak to the press. The Harper government is aggressively promoting the rampant development of Alberta's tar sands, even though tar sands are Canada's fastest-growing source of carbon pollution. Canada's record of broken climate promises speaks for itself.
