Republicans, Urge the FDA to Make Emergency Contraception Available Over the Counter
- by: Planned Parenthood
- recipient: Food and Drug Administration (FDA); President George Bush
It is expected that the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) will issue its decision on making emergency contraception (EC) available over the counter in early 2005. As many Republicans recognize, EC is the best way to prevent unintended pregnancy in cases of rape, incest, or contraceptive failure.
Please sign our petition to let the FDA and the Bush administration know that, as a Republican, you are concerned with preventing unintended pregnancies and that you support making EC more accessible by making it available over the counter!
Emergency Contraception A Brief Overview:
Emergency contraception (EC) has been available for more than 25 years and could prevent 1.7 million unintended pregnancies and 800,000 abortions each year in the U.S.
EC is safe, effective, and easy to use. Millions of women around the world have used EC safely and effectively.
Despite its enormous potential, anti-choice groups oppose the use of EC. In fact, just this past year, the Bush administration put pressure on the FDA to deny over-the-counter status to EC, which is why we need your help.
Please sign this petition and call on the FDA and administration to help Planned Parenthood prevent unintended pregnancy by making emergency contraception widely available over the counter!
Help Us Reduce the Number of Unintended Pregnancies
To President Bush and Food and Drug Administration:
I join with Planned Parenthood and call on the administration and the FDA to demand that emergency contraception be made available over the counter.
If a goal of the administration is truly to reduce the numbers of unintended pregnancies and abortions, the FDA should increase the availability of emergency contraception, which is the best way to prevent unintended pregnancy in cases of rape, incest, and contraceptive failure. As many Republicans (and Democrats) recognize, emergency contraception can prevent 1.7 million unintended pregnancies and 800,000 abortions each year in the U.S.
I call on you to stop playing politics with women's lives. Allow all women access to emergency contraception.
Sincerely,
[your name]
