A Sumatran tiger was shot dead at Lowry Park Zoo on the order of President and CEO Lex Salisbury. Salisbury himself shot the sumatran tiger named Enshala with a 12 gauge shotgun 4 times after 1 attempt with a tranquiliser dart failed. Reports state the Asian Zone where Enshala was being kept was currently closed for renovations and not open to the public. A couple of dozen people on the park when the tiger escaped had been removed from zoo property or had been secured inside buildings.
Reports also state that a zoo keeper who was in the process of securing the tiger for the night had left a door unlatched shortly before the zoo's closing time. The tiger then went through an empty adjoining building and into a construction area about 4.45pm, this area was NOT accessible to the public President and CEO Lex Salisbury said later.
The Tiger Telegraph Online accepts that the zoo keeper made a mistake in leaving the door unlatched but the ultimate responsibilty for the safety of the public and zoo animals lies with Lex Salisbury and we call upon him to resign immediately and for him to be charged with unlawful killing of a zoo animal, a murder that was totally unacceptable and unnecessary.
