Stop the Practice of Cannulating Cows!
In farms all over the United States, researchers have cut holes in the sides of cows called "cannulas,' effectively leaving an open wound in a cow's body for life.
The window into the cow, meant for research purposes, allows scientists to physically reach inside the animal's stomach to analyze the contents. Many scientists then use their findings to maximize the cows' "outputs" in terms of dairy and meat.
Although researchers claim that cannulated cows are just as healthy as normal cows, there is nothing non-invasive about leaving a gaping hole covered in plastic on cows' sides for the rest of their lives.
And because the Animal Welfare Act doesn't cover farm animals, these cows have no legal protection if cruelty or pain ensues from improperly enacted surgeries.
This practice has to stop today. Ask U.S. and Canadian farmers to stop cannulating cows immediately!
I am writing to ask you to stop the practice of cannulating cows. Though you claim that the practice is pain-free, there is nothing non-invasive about leaving a window open in a cow's side for the rest of its life.

Research should not trump humane practices, and this is no exception. Please stop cannulating any cows on your farms immediately!
