Don't Deny Civil Rights for Same-Sex Couples

The California Supreme Court recently deemed denying same-sex couples the right to marry unconstitutional, paving the way for same-sex marriage in the state. New York's governor David Paterson also recently decided to recognize same-sex marriages lawfully performed in other states and countries. And the Massachusetts Senate voted to overturn the law that banned out-of-state same-sex couples from marrying. These are important steps in the ongoing fight for marriage equality.
Every couple - regardless of sexual orientation - deserves the benefits that marriage brings, including equal rights to health care and the primary caregiver status. Voice your support of same-sex marriage to presidential candidates John McCain and Barack Obama.
Dear Senator McCain and Senator Obama,
Recently, the states of California and New York have made important strides in the fight for civil rights for same-sex couples. I urge you to continue this fight by making full support of same-sex marriages part of your national platform as you campaign for president.
I believe marriage is a right that should be open to Americans of all sexual orientation. Gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender couples deserve the same rights as straight couples. In particular, same-sex couples deserve equal rights to health care and the primary caregiver status, which is often currently denied because they cannot legally marry in most states.
I urge you to support a national right for same-sex couples to marry.
