In light of the fact that we are all concerned about animal abuse and welfare, it is disturbing that some schools and education facilities are still using live animals for study purposes. Such is the case with Sickles High School in Tampa, Florida who still implement the dissection of animals such as frogs in order to teach the children. Read http://www.peta.org/action/action-alerts/teacher-juggles-dead-frogs/?utm_campaign=110615%20PETA%20E-News&utm_source=PETA%20E-Mail&utm_medium=E-News These practices are not teaching these kids appropriately when disregarding the health and well-being of a creature when cutting it open for science.
At this school, PETA obtained a video that shows a science teacher juggling three frogs in front of class, calling them “flying frogs, “not a good move when trying to be an example for these young minds. It seemed like a joke to most of the children but nonetheless disturbing for some. This juggling act was clearly in violation of the guidelines set forth by the National Science Teachers Association and the National Association of Biology Teachers. The guidelines exemplify that educators and students must treat animals of all sorts in the classroom with respect and this clearly did not occur.
PETA has tried working with the school in Florida in hopes of them adopting other non-animal methods to educate the students. However, these attempts have fallen on deaf ears, especially when the educators continually failed to attend meetings geared at addressing this issue. Our goal in this petition is to speak out to authorities at the school and implore them to ban any further animal dissection, opting for other methods such as interactive software programs. Children do not need to learn that animals are inanimate objects for their amusement. You can help us in our efforts by signing and sharing this petition. Teaching such disrespect for animals can lead to more serious crimes as they major and grow.
Jake Russell, Sickles High School – We strongly urge you to stop the dissection of animals in your school and switch to better non-animal methods of education. The video that depicts an educator juggling some dead frogs in the front of the class is very disturbing, teach children that it is appropriate to treat animals as inanimate objects that are at the human’s disposal to harm and disrespect. Such an action will also lead some kids to more serious crimes in later years , which happens more and more these days. The actions in that video also is in violation of the guidelines by science education organizations. Animals are to be treated with respect and it is imperative that the children learn that as well. Stop the dissection of animals and develop other methods of teaching, such as interaction computer programs. Such an alternative has been proven to be less expensive, effective and is endorsed by the National Science Teachers Association. You must teach your kids that animals need to be treated with respect!
