Dear Senator/Representative:
I am disappointed that both the House and Senate squandered an important opportunity to include provisions in the energy bill that would have required the auto industry to produce cars and trucks that get significantly greater gas mileage.
As passed, both the House and Senate bills actually increase our dependence on oil. This is unacceptable. Congress should pass an energy bill that dramatically reduces our oil consumption, reduces climate change gases, and saves consumers money at the gas pump.
I understand that Congress is now working to reconcile the differences between the House and Senate versions before sending a final bill to the President for his signature. I urge you to do what you can to ensure that the energy bill does not contain provisions that weaken current fuel economy law and allow the auto industry to continue to produce gas-guzzling cars and trucks based on outdated technology. In particular, reject the Senate provisions that exempt pickup trucks from any future increases in fuel economy, extend existing loopholes, and create more hurdles to higher fuel economy standards.
It is time for the auto industry to put its technical know-how and engineering prowess to work for consumers, the environment, and greater energy security. No more excuses.
Sincerely,
