We've heard God blamed for Katrina and September 11. Now Jerry Newcombe, a spokesperson for the right-wing evangelical Truth in Action, proposes we blame God for the recent shootings in a Colorado movie theater.
"Civil libertarians have chased away any fear of God in the land," Newcombe wrote in a religious publication called OneNewsNow.
Newcombe turned his commentary into an altar call, reminding the unsaved to get right with God. Or they're next, presumably. He seized the opportunity to note that, in his opinion, any non-Christian victims of the shooting will go to hell.
Clearly, Newcombe's God is a vindictive, angry psychopath who would kill a group of innocent people to make a point. Tell Newcombe his comments reflect poorly on his religion and are unpardonably offensive to the families and memory of those killed in the theater due to no fault of their own.
We the undersigned believe that the recent mass shooting in a Colorado theater was a senseless tragedy. Your attempt to make it the act of a vengeful God is especially offensive to the families of those victims.
You have dishonored the memories of innocent movie goers by using their tragedy as a platform for preaching a really distasteful version of the gospel. Furthermore, you've portrayed God as a petty, vindictive, and random killer. No one in his right mind could respect, much less worship, your God.
Apologize for the rude and hurtful comments you have made about the Colorado shooting victims.
