Local councils scan, record & notify owners of all cat deaths collected from the roads!

When a cat is tragically involved in a road accident, a driver is not legally obliged to stop & help. A much loved family member is left to die alone, scared and in pain by the road side. With no assistance in its final moments of need, the inevitable happens.

Local councils will collect dead animals and dispose of them - in many cases on the local landfill site amongst general household waste. Many cats are microchipped but not all councils are obliged to scan them and notify the owner. Owners may never find out if the pet they are walking the streets calling for weeks/months on end is dead or alive. There is no closure and their feelings of loss may go on and on.

Our previous Care2 petition on this issue targeted local councils & was a huge success - resulting in 20 additional councils adopting a scanning approach! However, around 30% of local authorities still either do not scan, or did not respond to our enquiries. So we are now targeting this new campaign at them specifically.

Councils we know DO NOT currently scan: Highland, Moray, East Ayrshire, South Lanarkshire, Glasgow, Inverclyde, Harrogate, Leeds, Harborough, North Norfolk, Corby, North Devon, West Somerset, Greenwich, West Lyndsey, Gwynedd, Anglesey, Blaenau Gwent, Cardiff, Newport.

Sign now to tell these councils to scan cats for microchips when they find them deceased!

Even those that say they scan, we know many cats are sometimes slipping through the net for various reasons and, in some cases, the scanners are simply not being used. We not only call on all councils to introduce a scanning policy, we also call on those who do currently have microchip readers to improve the current flawed system. We call on elected Mayors to raise this issue with local authorities, and engage in influencing the much needed change within.

#CATSMATTER

Cats are living creatures and each has a family who loves them dearly. They were living, breathing family members - not general waste to be left to rot on a landfill site. Pet owners go to great lengths to ensure they are reunited with their pet, should the worst happen, and local councils should handle cats and owners with the dignity and respect they each deserve.

Our previous Care2 petition seen 20 councils so far adopt a scanning approach. However, with over 400 councils we tried to gather as much data of all councils as possible. As a result of signer's correspondence, along with our own, we have concluded the results. All councils do currently have microchip readers present in the depots, with the exception of the those listed above, and these councils who provided no comment, regardless of countless communication attempts: Falkirk, East Dunbartonshire, Newham, Sunderland, Middlesbrough, Staffordshire Moorlands, Newham, Rushcliffe, North Lincolnshire, Barking & Dagenham, Waveney, Malvern Hills, North Somerset, Havering, Sedgemoor, West Devon, Wycombe, Brentwood, Hillingdon, Kensington & Chelsea, Westminster, City of London, Bexley.

The remaining councils have claimed to scan BUT we have had numerous reports from around the UK of the scanning approach importance slipping and cats have still been taken to the local landfill site without being scanned. Our goals when we deliver this petition to the Councils & Mayors will be, not just for the above councils to adopt a scanning approach, but also to enforce the importance of all cats being scanned when they arrive at the depots.

Now we aim to target city & regional Mayors. Some areas of the UK do not currently have a Mayor, in these such areas we will tagret the Chief Exectutives of the County Council.
