Dogs in Romania are treated like vermin, actually worse! If people no longer want their dog they either call the dog catcher or take the animal out to the woods and just dump them. Most are not neutered or speyed, so there is always a constant production of puppies. The Mayor of each town pays a dog catcher to round up any stray dogs for which they are paid, the more they catch the more they get.
They are then put in a public shelter. These consist of wire cages, with no sides and sometimes no roof, so they get wet when it is raining or get sunstroke in the summer. In winter the temperature gets down to -30 degrees and many dogs just freeze to death, covered in snow and ice. In summer it gets up to 50 degrees, the flies are constant and the smell is unbearable!! Once they are in the shelter that is it! They do not get let out at all, they sleep on just a wooden pallet, if they are lucky and their kennels only get cleaned out, if they are lucky enough to have volunteers to look after them. Food is given if members of the public take time to feed them, but this can also lead to poisoning. Deaths are common every day.
The people supposed to look after them do not ,and many are beaten to death, just for fun.
Corruption is rife, and Mayors of towns are given money to look after the dogs, but it never gets there. These animals need to be helped, it is not their fault!!
